City of Baltimore Prepares for Inclement Weather Expected on Friday

Residents should use extreme caution if traveling Friday afternoon, as frigid temperatures may cause icy conditions

BALTIMORE, MD (December 22, 2022) – Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Baltimore City Department of Transportation Interim Director Corren Johnson are encouraging residents to prepare for possible winter precipitation and frigid temperatures expected in Baltimore on Friday.  According to the latest weather forecasts, colder air will move into the region starting tomorrow, which will bring freezing temperatures, high winds and possible ice throughout the holiday weekend.

"With frigid temperatures and icy conditions anticipated just before Christmas I am asking residents to prepare for the colder weather and exercise extreme caution when traveling," said Mayor Brandon M. Scott. "As residents are busy finalizing their holiday preparations, our crews are prepared to make city roadways safe for weekend travels."

The Baltimore City Snow Team has been readying snow equipment and will closely monitor weather and roadway conditions.  With over 15,000 tons of salt on hand and nearly 300 pieces of equipment, the city is fully prepared for efficient storm operations.

Residents are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and be prepared for inclement weather if traveling on Friday.  Weather conditions can change rapidly, causing roadways to become slick, especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses.  Motorists are strongly advised to plan additional travel time and allow extra following distance between vehicles for everyone’s safety.  Motorists are also reminded to drive at reduced speeds, as posted speed limits are based on ideal travel conditions and not for snow and ice.

Residents should also be prepared for extremely cold weather and windy conditions during this storm, as temperatures are expected to drop significantly on Friday.  “Real feel” temperatures will be sub-zero with significant wind chills this weekend, so residents are advised to stay indoors if possible.  Icy conditions may also develop Friday as colder air moves into the region.  Those who are traveling should make sure their vehicles are ‘road ready’ for inclement weather and equipped with blankets and emergency supplies.  Residents should also assemble emergency supply kits for their homes and fully charge all mobile devices in the event of possible power failures due to downed trees and power lines.

For updated weather forecasts and traffic conditions, residents should tune into local news stations, check media resources and visit the city’s snow page at snow.baltimorecity.gov.
